for those who posted comments - i have been having problems accepting them. this has happened before.. it may take some time but your comments will eventually be in. sorry. i appreciate your making the effort to share what you think… thanks many.

malditasha:

sagaynon - no worries, no offense taken. boysie or anyone of us who have something to say or tell can write.. being effective is not the point. the point is that we share our so-called collective memories. i’d like to hear yours too.

sagaynon:

sorry again ha, i’m your big fan too and i’ve been reading your blogs and really love them. i think your layout is excellent. what i said on my frist message is just an opinion..thanks

Sagaynon:

nice..but you had mentioned that it is boysie’s idea “the urban legend”, then why is he not writing it himself? i read his blogs too, it’s brilliant. i feel that he can write this more effectively than you. sorry, i like your blogs too, but when it comes to this kind of articles, i think it is boysie’s department. don’t get me wrong, i’m your fan too.

the zen bitch:

this lay-out is better. i love it!

sagay memory balls

September 10, 2008

two earlier posts “things familiar and not anymore” and “sagay urban legends”  snowballed into lively  memory exchanges by sagaynons, posted either as comments on this blog page or on the sagay city web’s guestbook.

here i copied some of the memory balls of sagaynons from different parts of the world.  most of these were in ilonggo, which i tried to “englicise ” but could not fully do justice to  the “kasadya” or the fun  of reminiscing  in the native tongue . thus at some point in this entry i abandoned the attempts at translation.

a note on “memory balls”  — in the movie, the never ending story II, the sorceress sought to complete the destruction of fantasia and bring “nothingness”  by eliminating the memories and imagination of the boy bastian.  bastian’s memories were contained in memory balls. in his quest to save fantasia, he was tricked by the sorceress to give up his memory balls.

let not the sagay that we knew be obliterated and reduced to “nothingness.”

my urban legend is our house…inspite of all the changes that were brought about by the people who live in the corner of maranon and cueva streets, wala guid nagchange ang amon balay [our house did not change at all]….i could say that the history of sagay was made in that mahiwagang marmol, not inside the walls of the munisipyo…..damo guid na witness sang ina nga lamesa [that table had witnessed much]…if only our marble table could speak of secrets, sorrows and plans drawn out over a cup of coffee, talaba, tinola nga bangrus, pinamalhan nga kikiro and dinugu-an of “idit”, who deserves to be given an award among the most loyal persons on earth….she has been living in the house since grade 1….i also give my salute to tya magdal, yayang celing, yaya nerba….the true-blue caregivers of our time….what would sagay be now without them? that would be another chapter

my favorite sagay urban legend setting is the daan merkado kapihan [coffee shops in the old market] ..di pa uso ang starbucks, figaro or mga bob’s cafe na ina,ara na ang kapihan sa merkado [ the coffee shops  have been there long before starbucks, Figaro or bob’s café  became en vouge] ..it was where u picked the latest news, gossip etc..ngaa ayhan namit gid ang kape sa daan merkado [why does coffee in the old market taste  good?] ..another favorite memory is going to the plaza to watch cartoons on the big black and white t.v. wonder what happened to that tv..

Good day my beloved Sagay…  one of the golden memories in Sagay before that big TV screen was going to the plaza to watch free movies from the mobile  van of Darigold Milk and sometimes from Marlboro and Philip Morris vans. The day before the free movie show, they will drive around within Sagay proper to announce the free movie with raffle prices. Most of the kids  would collect Darigold can milk wrappers for the raffle. They would also collect wrappers of Marlboro and Philip Morris cigarettes  to exchange for t -shirts,  mugs, j ackets or rims of cigarettes… You can see the Sagaynon families happily come  together to watch. Some brought their own chairs and some climb  the narra and mahogany trees to get a better view of the movie…

ay huo, makalantaw lang ta sine kon may ara sa plaza iya sang mga cigarilyo nga promotion. ang indi ko gid malipatan and kanyores nga ilaga ma sulod sa buho may number. akon lolo perme ga daog mga pinggan, baso kag iban pa.wala na ina subong, i missed it. iba na karon and takbo ng buhay sa sagay. damo na tawo and indi mo na makilala kay damo na ga istar mga bag o sa sagay. pero i have observed that siguro two years ago may fireworks display sa plaza kay opening sang christmas daw fiest ga gutok ang mga tawo kag enjoy gid bisan mga tigulang. katahom gid sang fireworks display kag kudos sa city government of Sagay. for your info ang old market gina renovate karon kag ka tahom sang plano nabutang sa gwa. the city govt. spend a million for that.these are all for the people of sagay . gani kong mag puli na kamo ma namian pa gid kamo sang inyong siudad nga natawhan.

[oh yes, we were only able to watch movies when cigarette companies put these up as promotions at the plaza.I could not forget the “kanyores “ where the mouse goes  inside a box with a number. My lolo always won prizes of plates and drinking glasses.   These are no longer there and I miss them.  Life in Sagay is different now;   there are more people and new settlers whom we don’t know.  There was a fireworks display at Christmas time about two years ago.  The overflowing crowd, including the elderly, greatly enjoyed the fiesta like atmosphere.  It was very beautiful and kudos to the city government of sagay.  For your information, the old market is being renovated and it looks beautiful, based on the design posted on the site.  When you visit home, you’d be pleased with the city of your birth.]

Mrs. Crestita Bedrejo was the head of the first vocational school for girls in sagay.  Si tyo bading chu ang ga tahi sang imo guba nga sapatos kag ara sya subong sa cueva street. [tio bading chu repaired shoes; he is now on cueva street.
